The Nigerian government was not in a hurry to restart passenger train operations in the country, Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi said on Monday.

The government was being careful not to make the train operation an instrument for the spread of COVID-19 in the country, the minister said.

Amaechi spoke amidst concerns from train passengers on when train services would resume.

The Nigeria Railway Corporation had announced the suspension of train services in the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, and developed protocols and guidelines for the resumption of operations.

As of Monday, the number of COVID-19 cases in Nigeria has surpassed 20,000. Enditem
