At least five people were killed and five others kidnapped after gunmen attacked a town in Nigeria’s northern state of Katsina, the police said on Monday.

Abubakar Sadik, the spokesperson for the state police, told Xinhua by phone that the attack occurred late Sunday as gunmen stormed the town of Danmusa, headquarters of the Danmusa local government area in Katsina, shooting indiscriminately at residents.

“So far, it has been confirmed that five people were shot dead and five others taken away by the gunmen,” Sadik said.

The police have launched a manhunt for the gunmen to rescue those abducted, he said, adding that an investigation is underway on the attack.

Local residents said the gunmen blocked all entry and exit points in the town, carrying out their sinister mission before the arrival of security operatives.

Armed attacks have been a primary security threat in Nigeria’s northern and central regions, leading to deaths and kidnappings in recent months.
