Nigeria is targeting the production of rice up to 7 million tons for local consumption by 2018, an official said on Wednesday.
The target, partly necessitated by the aim to attain the level of being one of the largest global producers of rice, is also aimed at meeting up with the national consumption rate, Audu Ogbeh, the country’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, told reporters in the capital Abuja.
To achieve the aim, the Nigerian government is assisting local rice farmers to boost their production as well as reduce the market price of the produce and boost the food security of the country, Ogbeh said.
The country aims to meet the target by the second quarter of 2018, according to the official.
Noting that more than 193 million citizens of the country currently consume local rice and 100 million others in the west and north Africa regions, Nigeria plans to expand its grains market across the world, he added. Enditem
