With the agreement, Nigerian entertainers will get an annual fee from Multichoice

The Copyright Society of Nigeria (COSON) has signed a landmark agreement with MultiChoice Nigeria, on artiste and filmmakers royalty payments and collection.

The deal which was signed on Tuesday, June 26, at Oriental Hotel, Lekki, Lagos;  is aimed at rewarding Nigerian artistes/filmmakers for their hardwork as well as promote and develop the country’s entertainment industry.

Tony Okoroji, the COSSON’s boss, who signed the deal, commended Multichoice for the deal.

?It is a great thing and long time coming. MultiChoice has clearly shown that it is a responsible corporate organisation with genuine concern for the protection of intellectual property in Nigeria,” he said.

According to John Ugbe, the Managing Director of MultiChoice Nigeria, the company was committed to the promotion of the Nigerian entertainment industry and against piracy.

?Piracy has a detrimental effect on any industry and will lead to the long term erosion of the industry. It also has a detrimental effect on the economy, since generally those involved in it do not pay the right owners for the works that they utilise.”

He added that these pirates only enriched their pockets while leaving those who had done the intellectual work with little reward.

With this agreement, Nigerian musicians (Dbanj, P-Square, Davido, Naeto-C, Wizkid etc.), Movie Producers (Uche Jombo, Emem Isong, Kunle Afolayan etc.), and some other entertainers will get an annual fee from MultiChoice (a body that sells the platform; DSTV) for the broadcast of their intellectual work.
