Nigerian authorities arrest 48 drug suspects in northern state

Nigeria’s anti-drug agency said on Thursday it has recently arrested 48 suspected drug dealers and users, and seized drugs totaling 50 kg in the north state of Jigawa.

In a statement on Thursday, Maryam Gambo, commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in the state, said the suspects were arrested in a recent special operation conducted in five local government areas of the state, which have borders with the Niger Republic.

The operation was carried out in collaboration with the state government in an effort to curb the menace of drug abuse across the state, Gambo said.

“The operation has led to the arrest of 48 drug suspects within the five local government areas … with a seizure of 30.461 kg of cannabis sativa and 20 kg of psychotropic substances, totaling 50.461 kg,” she said.

The anti-drug official said the operation would be extended to the other 22 local government areas in the state, in a bid to totally dislodge “suspected black spots and hideouts” of drug traffickers and users in the state. Enditem
