The La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra welcomed a team of nine Nigerian cyclists on Thursday.
Their journey from Lagos to Accra aimed to raise awareness and support for the autism community, marking the culmination of their journey.
This initiative is part of their involvement in the “Play with Stephen” Golf Tournament, which will run from August 23 to 25.
The cyclists began their ride on Tuesday, and their arrival is a crucial event among several organized by the Play with Stephen Foundation in anticipation of the tournament’s fifth edition.
Over the next two days, the cyclists will tour various parts of Accra before returning to Nigeria.
Their ride symbolizes a commitment to a cause that resonates deeply with the Play with Stephen Foundation’s mission.
Stephen Onaivi, founder of the Play with Stephen Foundation, praised the cyclists for their dedication.
“Your arrival is a testament to a journey of commitment, perseverance, and dedication,” Onaivi said.
“This initiative not only celebrates your remarkable effort but also highlights the ongoing journey faced by those with autism and their families.
We need more initiatives like this in West Africa to continue raising awareness and fostering understanding.”
Eziafakau Nwokolo, leader of the cycling team and a doctor with a child on the autism spectrum, emphasized the importance of both awareness and education. “Awareness alone is not enough; education is crucial,” Nwokolo stated.
“Autism is a hidden disability, and without proper understanding, it remains misunderstood.
My own experiences have shown me the importance of educating others about autism to foster a more inclusive environment.”
Mr. Anthony Ghansah, General Manager of the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel, expressed enthusiasm about supporting the Play with Stephen Foundation.
“Partnering with Stephen and his team aligns with our commitment to corporate social responsibility.
We’re thrilled to be part of this impactful initiative, especially with the addition of the golf tournament,” Ghansah said.
The Play with Stephen Golf Tournament will feature golfers, enthusiasts, and advocates at the Achimota Golf Club on Sunday.
It will offer a platform for networking and enjoyment while supporting autism awareness.
