The Nigerian military said on Tuesday that it conducted multiple airstrikes which killed an unknown number of gunmen, and destroyed their hideouts in the northwestern region of the country.

The military airstrikes on Monday targeted the camps of the gunmen, believed to be bandits who terrorized local communities in the northwestern states of Katsina and Zamfara, a military statement said.

The ongoing Operation Hadarin Daji is one of the multiple military operations in Nigeria’s northwest region which has been wracked by years of violence.

The attack aircraft and helicopter gunships used for the operation hit a forest located in the south of Birnin Kogo, along the Katsina and Zamfara states boundary area, killing the gunmen, said the statement. The forest served as the mini-camps of the gunmen who hid in huts.

Three of such camps went up in flames as a result of the airstrikes, the statement added.Banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities have recently become rampant in the northwest region.

The military high command said they are in control of the situation with ongoing multiple operations against the gunmen.
