In the fervently religious city of Kano, northern Nigeria, a prayer gathering recently convened with a singular focus: to seek divine favour for the imminent success of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

This sprawling US$19 billion (£15bn) industrial complex, slated to commence petrol production next month, has captured national hopes as a potential game-changer in Nigeria’s energy landscape.

Organized amidst local anticipation, the prayer session reflects widespread optimism that the refinery, comparable in size to nearly 4,000 football pitches, will significantly boost petrol availability and drive down prices nationwide.

Constructed along Nigeria’s southern coast near Lagos, the facility initiated operations earlier this year with diesel and aviation fuel production, marking a pivotal step towards its broader objectives.

Central to the refinery’s promise is its potential to liberate Nigeria from longstanding reliance on fuel imports. Despite being Africa’s largest crude oil producer and ranked 15th globally, Nigeria needs help with operational inefficiencies in its government-owned refineries.

In contrast, the Dangote refinery, spearheaded by Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual and a native of Kano, underscores private sector leadership in addressing national infrastructure deficits.

With a personal net worth of US$12.6 billion, Aliko Dangote has steered his conglomerate, Dangote Group, from the cement and sugar industries to this monumental undertaking in oil refining. The refinery’s successful operation holds strategic significance for Nigeria’s economic stability, broader industrial growth, and energy security objectives.

As anticipation builds ahead of its petrol production debut, Nigerians eagerly await the refinery’s potential to reshape the nation’s energy landscape and foster sustainable economic development.
