At least nine people were killed early Thursday when a group of suspected gunmen attacked a community in Nigeria’s northern state of Katsina, the police said.

Abubakar Aliyu, the spokesman for the police in Katsina, told reporters that five vehicles were burned during the dawn attack on the village of Kukar Babangida in the state’s Jibia local government area.

The assailants entered the village and began shooting sporadically from AK47 rifles, said Aliyu.

Police operatives were swiftly deployed to the village to investigate the incident and restore normalcy to the general area, Aliyu said.
