No New Vice-Chancellor Yet For UDS

Professor Francis Amagloh, Professorial Representative to the Governing Council of the University for Development Studies (UDS) says the Governing Council of UDS has not yet appointed a new Vice-Chancellor to succeed the current Vice-Chancellor of University.

He said the report of the Search Committee constituted by the Governing Council of UDS to select the new Vice-Chancellor was not yet made available to Council Members neither did Council Members meet to consider such a report.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Tamale on Friday to react to an appointment letter in the public domain, which announced the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor to succeed the current Vice-Chancellor.

The tenure of the current Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Professor Gabriel Ayum Teye, will expire at the end of August, this year.

In view of this, the Governing Council of UDS inaugurated a Search Committee in December, 2021 to look for a suitable candidate to take over the office.

The Search Committee had interviewed about three applicants for the position, and was to present its report by May 31, this year.

However, GNA has seen an appointment letter dated June 01, 2022, announcing Professor Seidu Al-Hassan as the new Vice-Chancellor to assume office on September 01, 2022, for a four-year term.

The appointment letter, which was written and signed by the Chairman of the UDS Governing Council, Professor Wayo Seini, said the appointment of Professor Al-Hassan was based on the “Overall outcome of the thorough and extensive work done by the Search Committee.”

However, Professor Amagloh said based on the laws and statutes of UDS, it was only Council Members of the UDS, who had the mandate to appoint Vice-Chancellors for the University.

He added that, “Even if the Chairman of Council has seen the report, he does not have the power to unilaterally announce the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor. Council Members must meet to consider the report, and if need be, vote to select the Vice-Chancellor before the Chairman can go ahead to announce the appointment.”
