Nokia?s 808 PureView smartphone has a 41-megapixel camera

Nokia could finally give everyone a reason to buy a Windows Phone 8 smartphone. Nokia?s 808 PureView smartphone caught everyone?s attention for one reason, and it wasn?t its screen. The phone has a 41-megapixel camera.

As we explained last year, the 41-megapixel sensor isn?t used to print massive posters, but to oversample pixels. Instead of one pixel, the PureView sensor samples seven and then turns it into a ?pure? pixel. The final result is an image that can be zoomed in at three times with no noticeable detail loss.

Nokia?s PureView camera also shoots photos in low light settings at f/2.0 aperture with reduced blur.

Unfortunately, the phone got stuck with an operating system that is now officially dead and $700 sticker price. It also didn?t help that the phone was only sold in the U.S. on Amazon.

But there?s still hope! According to The Verge , Nokia is planning to release a high-end Lumia smartphone running Windows Phone 8 with a similar sensor as the one in the 808 PureView. AT&T will reportedly sell the phone, which is said to have an ?aluminum body and squared edges.?

Will pro photographers finally have a smartphone with a camera that will do them proud? Fingers crossed!
