In a recent initiative to bolster water safety, Eliasu Bawa, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of North Gonja District in Ghana’s Savannah Region, has donated 100 life jackets to canoe and boat operators navigating the White Volta in Daboya.
This donation is part of a broader effort that began in 2017, during which Bawa has provided 350 life jackets.
Over the past seven and a half years, Bawa has proactively addressed the White Volta’s seasonal overflow risks. His actions include advocating for water safety, enhancing public health systems, and distributing essential resources.
Notably, in 2022, Bawa, in partnership with Ecozoil Ltd, contributed approximately 200 life jackets. Furthering this commitment, on October 12, 2023, Bawa donated 50 life jackets.
On July 15, 2024, constituency secretary Abubakari Abdul-Karim presented another 100 life jackets on behalf of the DCE, bringing the cumulative total to 350.
These life jackets ensure safety on the White Volta, a significant waterway prone to dangerous conditions. Properly fitted life jackets can keep individuals afloat for up to 24 hours. Bawa has emphasized the importance of using such safety equipment and encouraged the community to prioritize water safety.
The White Volta, which serves as the primary drainage for North Gonja, poses significant challenges due to the region’s fluctuating topography and seasonal rainfall. With altitudes ranging from 70 to 500 meters above sea level, the district experiences heavy rains from May to October, contributing to erosion and flooding.
The White Volta, originating in Northern Burkina Faso and flowing into Lake Volta in Ghana, is prone to overflowing, leading to dangerous conditions and property damage. Past incidents, including boat accidents with casualties in 2014 and 2016, underscore the need for enhanced safety measures.
A permanent solution to these issues is underway with the ongoing construction of the Daboya Bridge over the White Volta. The contractor is diligently working to complete the project within the planned timelines, promising a long-term improvement in the region’s infrastructure and safety.
