The Northern Girl Initiative proudly announced the launch of its second cohort for the Young Women’s Coding and Leadership Development Project, formerly known as the Northern Girls Coding Project, on July 26, 2024, at the Tamale Technical University campus.
This transformative program welcomed 30 young women from diverse backgrounds to embark on a seven-week journey of digital empowerment, which includes hands-on coding sessions, leadership workshops, and mentorship from industry experts.
Designed to address the gender gap in the tech industry, the initiative provides comprehensive training in digital marketing, coding, search engine optimization, internet security, leadership development, and entrepreneurship.
Participants, a diverse group including students from institutions like the University for Development Studies (UDS) and Tamale Technical University, and recent graduates from senior high schools in the Northern Region of Ghana, have come together for this initiative.
The program aims to empower young women, particularly from underprivileged backgrounds, foster gender equality, and address climate-induced challenges.
Ms. Ruka Yaro De-Liman, Executive Director of the Northern Girl Initiative, delivered an inspiring message to the participants, encouraging them to engage fully in the training.
Ms. De-Liman emphasized, “Embrace this training with utmost dedication and build the skills needed to explore career opportunities in the tech space.”
“Digital skills empower young women to advocate for critical socio-economic issues locally and nationally.”
The inaugural edition of the Young Women’s Coding and Leadership Development Project concluded in December 2023 with 30 participants successfully completing the training. These young women utilized their skills to create impactful graphic campaigns addressing gender-based violence and promoting environmental sustainability, showcasing the potential of digital literacy to drive positive societal change.
