The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled a re-run of its parliamentary primary in the Walewale Constituency for Sunday, September 8, 2024.

This decision comes in response to a ruling by the Tamale High Court, which annulled the initial results of the January 27 primary.

The court, led by Justice Richard Kogjawah, found that the initial election, which resulted in Dr Kabiru Mahama being named the party’s parliamentary candidate, was marred by significant irregularities, including impersonation and overvoting.

The incumbent MP, Hajia Lariba Abudu, who narrowly lost in the January poll, had contested the results, leading to the court’s intervention.

In a statement signed by the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the party announced that nominations for the re-run will close on Thursday, September 5, 2024. Notably, costs associated with the primary will be waived for candidates who participated in the original January election.

However, new candidates wishing to enter the race must pay a non-refundable fee of GH¢3,000 for the nomination forms. Additionally, there will be a filing fee of GH¢35,000.

The re-run aims to address the issues identified in the previous election and ensure a fair and transparent process for selecting the party’s candidate for the upcoming general elections.
