In a concerted effort to bolster unity within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ejisu constituency of the Ashanti Region, Edward Boateng, Chairman of the Ashanti Region Reconciliation Team, convened a pivotal meeting with former party executives on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The meeting, orchestrated by Dr Kwame Agyeman-Budu, aimed to foster collaboration and resolve internal disputes within the party.
The Ejisu constituency has faced internal strife, particularly following contentious polling station elections in 2022, which some party members criticized as “unfair.”
Tensions escalated when four-time lawmaker Mr Aduomi left the party to contest as an independent candidate in the April by-election following the death of the then-incumbent MP, Dr John Ampontuah Kumah.
However, a recent mediation effort by the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders, a respected body within the NPP, led to Mr Aduomi’s decision to withdraw his independent candidacy for the December parliamentary elections.
The August 17 meeting followed these mediation efforts and focused on addressing the concerns of former party executives who had been dissatisfied with their loss of positions two years prior, particularly the perceived lack of transparency in the selection process.
Emelda Antwi, secretary to the reconciliation committee, highlighted that the gathering was part of ongoing efforts to address issues raised in the previous engagement with Mr Aduomi.
Kwabena Boateng (Esq), the incumbent MP for Ejisu and the party’s parliamentary candidate, attended the meeting. Emelda Antwi noted that discussions centred on the critical need for peacebuilding, cohesion, and teamwork within the Ejisu constituency as the party gears up for the upcoming elections, reaffirming the party’s commitment to these values.
Chairman Edward Boateng assured attendees that further meetings, in which their active participation is crucial, would be scheduled to sustain the reconciliation process and address any residual conflicts within the party, emphasizing the urgency of unified effort as the electoral season approaches.
