The controversy surrounding the supposed inciting comments made by the Assin North Member of Parliament, Kennedy Agyapong, has taken a new twist. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) bigwig says the decision to dissociate the party from his abrasive comments was orchestrated by three leading members of the party.
On 13th April this year, Ken Agyapong announced on his radio station, Oman FM, that he was declaring war in the country. His statement was coming on the heels of the alleged violent attack on his party member, Ursula Owusu in the Odododiodoo constituency during a tour by the latter to encourage people to participate in the biometric voter registration exercise.
He was subsequently invited, detained and charged by the Police CID for making treasonable pronouncements on radio. He is currently facing charges of treason, felony, attempted genocide and engaging in terrorist acts.
Various groups and political parties came out to condemn the MP’s comments. The NPP Executives also somewhat distanced the party from the comments.
Mr Agyapong was responding to accusations from the Central Regional Minister, Ama Benyiwa Doe, on Adom FM on Friday. The Minister had stated that Thursday’s attack on some Ewes in the Ekumfi Traditional area by the indigenes was fuelled by Ken Agyapong’s tribal comments against Gas and Ewes.
He denied ever saying that Akans should attack and kill Ewes and Gas, explaining that he made a conditional case that if the violence against people of Akan extractions do not stop, they will be forced to defend themselves.
Not the least amused by the way his party treated him during his trying times, Mr. Agyapong slammed leading members of the party for betraying him.
He suggested that the decision to dissociate the party from his comments was not a unanimous one taken by executives of the party. According to him, Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, Oboshie Sai Coffie and Nana Akomea spearheaded the attempt to absolve the party of any potential repercussions of his comments.
“They wrote the letter and gave it to the executives to go and read that they’ve disassociated themselves from Ken Agyapong and I thank them for that,” he revealed.
He said he expected that the NPP will stand by him like the ruling party did when Koku Anyidoho goofed in his recent outburst after the blackout at the Baba Yara Sports stadium during the World Cup qualifier between Ghana and Lesotho.
He said unlike in the NDC’s case “the so called elitist in NPP” who wrote Ghana’s constitution sacrificed him on the altar of political expediency.
“This is the first interview I am granting expressing the way I’m peeved; expressing the way the NPP executives, especially, Gabby Otchere Darko and Oboshie Sai treated me; And the question any citizen, ordinary citizen, who is not even educated will ask [is] ‘was Ken Agyapong speaking for himself or speaking for the party?’”
He said anytime he encounters Nana Akomea, he gets really amused because “that boy (Nana Akomea) was working for me. Go and ask Nana Akomea; when he finished university, he was working form me.”
“I am cool but I am not scared of anybody” Ken Agyapong stressed, adding “I am only quiet because already, NPP has taken a position and I don’t know how to defend anything so I will defend my case in court.”
