The Women’s wing of the opposition New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Ashanti Region, last Tuesday, jettisoned the usual love and merry-making associated with Valentine’s Day, by spending the day with inmates of the Garden City Special School for the Mentally Handicapped at Asokore Mampong, in the Asawase Constituency.
The NPP women, who stormed the school premises early in the morning to celebrate the day with the students, also made a donation of assorted food and drinks to bring smiles to their faces.
The Regional Women’s Organiser of the party, Mrs. Alberta Owusu Ansah, who led the women’s wing to make the donation, said the gesture was their widow’s mite to showcase their love and dedication for the unfortunate in the society.
She noted that special days like Valentine’s should not be used for lustful and illicit activity, but instead, used to exhibit love and affection for one another, particularly, people who are mentally afflicted.
The Headmistress of the school, Mrs. Roseline Adjepong, said the decision by the NPP women’s wing to celebrate the occasion with the students was a unique one, and commended them for the kind gesture.
She indicated that moments like that bring joy and excitement to the students, and give them a sense of belonging, which she noted, helps them concentrate on their academic activities.
