Ibrahim Adjei, a former assistant secretary in the office of ex-President Nana Akufo-Addo, has cited leadership shortcomings as a key factor in the New Patriotic Party’s defeat in the 2024 elections.

His remarks came during an interview on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily, where he also defended Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent public statements, framing them as a necessary response to public demand for transparency.

Adjei emphasized the importance of honesty in governance, stating that Bawumia’s approach aligns with Ghanaian expectations. “Integrity matters deeply in our politics,” he said. “People want leaders who acknowledge realities rather than deflect blame.”

He rejected suggestions that Bawumia was trying to distance himself from the Akufo-Addo administration’s challenges. Instead, Adjei argued that the former president’s reluctance to make key changes, particularly in his cabinet, eroded public confidence. “When leadership refuses to adapt despite clear signals, it creates disillusionment,” he said.

A focal point of Adjei’s criticism was Akufo-Addo’s decision to retain Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta despite mounting pressure from within the NPP. “Over 120 parliamentarians called for his removal, yet the president prioritized personal loyalty over accountability,” he noted. “That refusal to act symbolized a broader failure to respond to the electorate’s concerns.”

The NPP’s loss has sparked introspection within the party, with figures like Adjei highlighting the need for responsive leadership. Political observers note that economic challenges and perceptions of governmental stagnation likely influenced voter sentiment. As the party regroups, the balance between steadfastness and adaptability will remain a critical discussion one that could shape its future trajectory.
