Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the running mate to New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, affirmed the party’s commitment to fostering closer ties between the political leadership and traditional authorities.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh made these remarks on Wednesday, July 24, following a courtesy call on His Royal Majesty Djetse Nene Abram Kabu Akuaku III, the paramount chief of the Ada traditional area and President of the Ada Traditional Council.
In a Facebook post after the meeting, the lawmaker for Manhyia South highlighted, “The Bawumia 2024 campaign continues to prioritize a deepened relationship between the political class and traditional authority.”
He thanked vital supporters, including the Regional Minister, NPP Greater Accra Regional Chairman, NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Ada, and NPP executives in the Ada constituency for their unwavering support.
Earlier, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP flagbearer, outlined his administration’s commitment to empowering traditional leaders to financially aid national development.
During a meeting with the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs as part of his regional tour, Dr Bawumia proposed amending the Chieftaincy Act to enhance the role of chiefs in governance.
“We need to empower the chiefs to help the government, and empowering them includes financial resources,” Dr Bawumia asserted.
“My manifesto team has proposed providing living allowances to paramount chiefs, divisional chiefs, and queen mothers, ensuring a robust chieftaincy institution capable of supporting government initiatives.”
The pledge forms part of Dr. Bawumia’s electoral promises as he campaigns ahead of this year’s elections. He aims to strengthen collaboration between traditional authorities and the government for national progress.
