NSE?s turnover of N26.7b buoyed by volume of shares traded


Transactions in the shares of some banking and insurance stocks, last week, buoyed the volume of shares traded, as a turnover of 3.778 billion shares worth N26.740 billion changed hands in 22,771 deals, in contrast to a total of 2.097 billion shares valued at N20.231 billion exchanged hands in 21,802 deals during the preceding week.
The financial services industry (measured by volume) led the activity chart with 3.334 billion shares valued at N17.100 billion traded in 13,676 deals; thus contributing 88.24per cent and 63.95per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively. The conglomerates industry followed with a turnover of 181.563 million shares worth N772.640 million in 1,286 deals.
The third place was occupied by the services industry with 90.018 million shares worth N259.194 million in 659 deals.
Trading in the top three equities namely- Linkage Assurance Plc, Sterling Bank Plc and Continental Insurance Plc (measured by volume) accounted for 1.518 billion shares worth N1.563 billion in 457 deals, contributing 40.20per cent and 5.85per cent to the total equity turnover volume and value respectively.
Also traded during the week were a total of 40,506 units of Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) valued at N707,472.45 executed in 15 deals compared with a total of 100,812 units valued at N1.765 million transacted last week in thirteen deals.
While there was no activity on the debt board in the previous week, this week recorded 7,714 units of FGN bonds valued at N8.119 million traded in 12 deals.
The NSE All-Share Index and market capitalization depreciated by 11.54per cent and 11.54per cent to close on Friday at 33,216.31 and N11.002 trillion respectively.
Similarly, all the indices depreciated during the week with exception of the NSE ASeM that closed flat.?
