Greetings to all concerned stakeholders and students of Ghana who I represent as President.

Our attention has been drawn to claims by one Luqman Abubakari carrying himself as President of the National Union of Ghana Students. Whilst his claims to the presidency are ridiculous, lacks the sincerity and truth thereof, I am by all means obliged to set the records straight.

For the records, I am still in post as the NUGS PRESIDENT; the only legitimate president until I hand over.

Indeed at our recently concluded Annual National Residential Delegates Congress in Hohoe, delegates drawn from various institutions across the country voted and elected Mr Julian M. Cobbinah as NUGS President for the 2016/17 academic year. The congress organised under EC supervision at the St. Francis College of Education, Hohoe is the only legitimate avenue recognised by our sovereign constitution concerning where and when national executives of the Union are elected.

LUQMAN IS A FRAUD

The said gentleman carrying himself as NUGS President has no legitimate right to that title of our noble union. At NUGS, we elect our national leaders and under no circumstance do we appoint leaders. Before NUGS congress could even begin, Luqman encouraged by detractors of the union appointed himself as president because he lacks the courage and temerity to stand for a competitive elections. The last we heard, he is carrying himself as president when the current NUGS President has not left office yet. As such, Luqman is an imposter and we entreat all and sundry to refrain from dealing with him in any capacity whatsoever.

As we speak, the said imposter is languishing in the cells of the Regional Police Headquarters after he with the support of tugs ” Macho men” tried to abduct the NUGS President-Elect, Julian M. Cobbinah as he was about to speak on News @10 by TV3.

As a law abiding organisation, we entreat the police to let the law have its course to serve as deterrent to individuals who would want to perpetuate evil in the Union’s name.

MEDIA MUST CROSSCHECK THEIR FACTS

The leadership of NUGS takes strong exceptions to media reports that there are two rival NUGS groups. As it stands now, there is only one National Union of Ghana Students and I remain the president until I dutifully handover to the Julian M. Cobbinah led administration as stipulated by the NUGS constitution.

Our disappointment knows no bounds at the conduct of some media houses, who failed to verify claims by the imposter Luqman and his entourage of desperate ‘wanna bes’.

As the fourth estate of the realm and watchdogs of society, the media plays an important role in the functioning of our social systems. It is for this reason we find some media reports of the false claims by Luqman and his surrogates case most unfortunate.

JULIAN MAWUSE COBBINAH IS NUGS PRESIDENT-ELECT

Having said this, we the current leadership of NUGS only recognise Julian Mawuse Cobbinah and the other executives elect. We entreat all stakeholders particularly the media to disregard any attention seeking venture of Luqman or any of his surrogates. On the other hand, we will not hesitate to take drastic measures against any entity that deals with any ‘unrecognised’ individual in the name of NUGS.

We also wish to offer our utmost support to Mr Julian Mawuse Cobbinah as he treats bruises he received from the attack at the premises of TV 3. The entire leadership of NUGS is solidly behind you as students of Ghana chose you to lead them.

Finally, we are using this release to call on the media and the general public NOT to give room to those imposters in the name of NUGS. Again, we are sending a stern warning to the imposter of a certain self-acclaimed NUGS President, Abubakari Luqman and his shameless self-acclaimed executives to steer clear of the Union’s affairs. We shall refer them to the appropriate law enforcement agencies to deal with them accordingly.
