NW Cambodia bus-track crash claims 8 lives and injured 25

At least eight Cambodians were killed and 25 others injured in a collision between a passenger bus and a crane truck on Saturday in northwestern Cambodia's Battambong province, a senior traffic police officer confirmed.

The fatal crash took place at 3:30 pm (local time) on the National Road 5 in Mong Russei district when the front tire of the speeding passenger bus exploded and swerved to hit the crane truck coming from an opposite direction, said Sath Kimsan, chief of the traffic police in Battambang province.

“Eight people, including the drivers of the two vehicles, were killed on the spot and about 25 others on the bus were injured in the crash,” he told Xinhua.

The injured people have been sent to nearby clinics and hospitals where several of them are in critical condition, he added.

Road accidents are a leading cause of death in the Southeast Asian country of Cambodia, killing an average of six people per day. According to a government’s report, road crashes killed 2,265 people last year, up 5 percent year-on-year. Enditem
