Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has urgently called on President Nana Akufo-Addo to publicly apologize to Ghanaians for the country’s current economic difficulties.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe’s remarks follow a statement by Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, who suggested that the NPP could improve its chances in the upcoming December elections by apologizing for the state of the economy.
However, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe believes the apology should come directly from President Akufo-Addo rather than the party.
“Kennedy Agyapong’s call is valid, but it comes too late,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said.
He argued that the economic hardship has severely impacted ordinary citizens, who are struggling to afford even the most basic necessities.
He cited the high cost of bottled water as a symbol of the broader economic challenges.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe proposed that President Akufo-Addo should address the nation with a public apology, similar to the broadcasts by Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah.
He suggested that such an action might help to address public dissatisfaction and shift opinions.
The NPP stalwart criticized the government for failing to deliver on promises such as the ‘One District, One Factory’ initiative and assurances made to the people, and he expressed concern that democracy itself has been undermined.
He emphasized the crucial importance of listening to the populace’s concerns and warned that the power of public sentiment should not be underestimated.
“What happened in Bangladesh recently shows that when the masses mobilize, their strength is undeniable,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe cautioned. He urged leaders to heed the people’s voices to ensure peace and stability.
