The Akure-club are Nigeria’s only representatives in the CAF Champions League
Gbenga Ogunbote, the Manager of Akure-based Sunshine Stars FC, has urged Nigerians to support the team to enable it excel in the CAF Champions League.
Ogunbote made the appeal to sports writers, after the Sunshine Stars lost 0-1 to Sharks FC in a Premier League match in Port Harcourt.
“We are the only Nigerian team playing at the continental level. We appeal to Nigerians to support us to scale through our group,” he said.
Ogunbote said his team should not have lost to Sharks in their Premier League match.
“We played better than Sharks and deserve to win the match,” he said.
Gomo Onduku’s goal in the 50th minute gave the Port Harcourt team the maximum points.
Sharks Media officer, Confidence Idah, said the victory was a deserved one.
“In the first leg in Akure, we lost 1-2 and we knew then they were a mobile team. We trained to counter their mobility,” he said.
