Mr Frank Fusiene Adongo, Deputy Upper East Regional Minister, has urged members of the old District Assemblies to work more to raise and sustain their status as new assemblies have been created out of them.

He explained that even though the creation of the new assemblies out of the old ones, may bring about improved development to the areas, it may also affect the collections and sharing of the resources there.

Mr Adongo made the call at the election of the Garu District Assembly Presiding Member (PM) at Garu in the Upper East Region.

He explained that the revenue that produced the Internally Generated Fund (IGF) for the district when it was one would now be divided into two, as the areas for revenue collection may also be divided among the new and the old districts.

The Deputy Minister said the old district would now have to work extra in terms of revenue mobilisation, and capacity building among others to be able to stand firm to discharge their duties as agents of local governance for the development of the people.

He reminded the assemblies of their roles in the development of the area and the provision of quality livelihoods to the people and charged the assembly members to remain non-partisan and elect a Presiding Member who is experienced and committed to working with the Coordinating Director and the Chief Executive of the District.

Mr Adongo noted that the success of the District Assembly would depend on how united the members of the assembly were and urged members in the house to take the development agenda of their Assembly seriously.

He charged the presiding member elect Mr Moses Bampil Badeobo of the Denugu electoral area to be fair in the discharge of his duties to bring collective support in the administration of the assembly.

Mr Badeobo polled 14 out of 20 votes cast to beat his two contenders Mr Philip Atambugri of Garu-Natinga and Mr Joseph Agbango Ayawini of the Kugri-Natinga electoral areas.

Mr Emmanuel Avoka Asore District Chief Executive for the area commended the members for choosing a leader who would steer the affairs of the assembly and called on them to give him the needed support to work efficiently.
