At least one miner died while two others were injured after heavy rocks fell on them at a coal mine in southern Zambia’s Sinazongwe district, a company official confirmed on Friday.

The accident occurred on Thursday at Collum Coal Enterprises Mine at mine shaft one when the deceased and his colleagues were on duty.

Ketson Munthali, the mine manager said the deceased miner died on the spot while another one was seriously injured and third one has slight injures, according to state-run news agency, the Zambian News and Information Service (ZANIS).

He said it was unfortunate that the accident occurred especially at a time management has intensified safety awareness talks.

District Commissioner Protacial Mulenga, who visited the mine, expressed sadness over the loss of life in an accident at the mine.

He urged management to ensure highest safety standards by ensuring that workers were provided with protective clothing. Enditem
