Police in Zambia on Thursday recorded a warm and caution statement from an opposition leader for defaming President Edgar Lungu.
Saviour Chishimba, leader of the United Progressive Party is alleged to have defamed the Zambian leader between July 1 and July 8, 2017, according to police spokesperson Esther Mwaata-Katongo.
“He has since been detained in police custody and will be charged once officers are done with the processes,” she said.
The opposition leader was picked up by plain clothed police officers on Thursday when he appeared for a live television interview, Diamond TV.
He is one of the fierce critics of the current government whom he has accused constantly of corruption.
He becomes the second person to be arrested within a month over the defamation of the Zambian leader.
A student was arrested last month and appeared in court where he denied the charge of defaming Lungu.
Hakainde Hichilema has been in prison for the last three months following his arrest in April and has been slapped with treason. Enditem
