The La District Court has remanded a final-year student from O’Reilly Senior High School (SHS) who fatally stabbed a classmate, Edward Borketey Sackey, for two weeks.
The student, whose identity has been withheld, faces provisional charges of murder. The court did not accept his plea and has scheduled his next appearance for September 19, 2024.
This adjournment allows the police additional time to conduct further investigations into the incident.
The stabbing occurred following a dispute between the two students over their families’ financial status. The Ghana Education Service (GES) has urged the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigative process to proceed without interference.
In a statement issued on September 4, 2024, the GES expressed deep regret over the tragedy. “Our thoughts and condolences go out to the bereaved family, friends, and the entire school community,” the statement read.
The Director General of GES and a delegation visited both the school and the deceased’s family to offer their condolences.
The GES assured us it would work closely with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.
“We hope to conclude our administrative investigations within two weeks while the Police Service handles the criminal aspects,” the statement said.
“We are pleased to report that calm has been restored on the campus, and we are committed to ensuring the well-being and safety of all students and staff.”
The GES reaffirmed its dedication to providing a safe and conducive learning environment and pledged to work tirelessly to prevent such incidents and ensure that schools remain secure spaces for academic excellence.
