Organised Labour remains resolute in its decision to proceed with a strike starting today, Monday, July 15.

The strike will demand the dissolution of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) board despite the termination of a controversial hotel stake sale.

The strike was announced in protest against selling a 60% stake in four SSNIT-owned hotels to Rock City Hotel, owned by Agriculture Minister Bryan Acheampong. Despite SSNIT’s decision to halt the transaction following intense pressure from other unions, Organised Labour insists on pressing forward with the strike until further demands are met.

Kenneth Koomson, Deputy Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour, emphasised Ghanaian workers’ historic and ongoing contributions and underscored the unity displayed by labour unions. He stated, “The strike will not be called off until the SSNIT board is dissolved.”

Koomson revealed plans for an emergency meeting to discuss recent developments and convey the unions’ position. He emphasised the importance of ensuring proper governance in institutions like SSNIT, which is responsible for safeguarding social security.

“We thought that it was important to assemble today to review the letter that has been written by SSNIT and then take a decision,” Koomson stated, noting that an official announcement would follow the meeting.

This emphasis on transparency and inclusivity in the decision-making process keeps the audience informed and involved.

Organised Labour’s stance reflects ongoing concerns over governance and transparency in state institutions. This vigilance is aimed at securing the welfare and rights of Ghanaian workers and citizens alike, keeping the audience aware and alert about the issues at hand.
