Adams Oshiomhole, the Edo State Governor, has been traing hard for the second edition of the Okpekpe International 10km Road Race.
The race has recently applied for IAAF Gold Status and, according to organisers, should be awarded the status by May 3 when the race takes place.
The Governor has been training in the hilly Iyamoh/Ayua area and has been helped by former international athlete Yusuf Ali. The athlete is also the technical director for the race.
With a stringent training schedule and Ali as his coach, Oshiomhole is hoping to for a top finish.
“Last year Oshiomhole finished at 131st position. This year he is well prepared and ready to be among the first ten finishers,” revealed Ali.
Meanwhile, the communities in the area are grateful for the return of the race, as it provides them with a economic burst. Vendors like Usman Lawal, for example, explained how all the people that attended the race turned his life around.
“Last year I made a lot of money. Now, I am able to expand my business. May God bless the initiators of the programme,” he said.
