Tema Station, has been a cosmopolitan lorry station that one could get a car to almost every destination in Accra and beyond. As it stands now, the station and its enclave is being engulfed with filth, while people of both sexes urinate openly in gutters. Most people at this place usually by pass refuse containers and rather dump their waste in the drains.
The sight of human excreta is so common that it is no longer a great concern to commuters. The deadly scent emanating from a drain behind the Department of National Lotteries is fatal especially in the afternoon.
The biggest problem is that the station is in the national capital, and close to the Ministries, where the Ministry of Tourism is wooing tourists to visit.
In view of this, Mr. Betnard Mats Yingura, Director of the Osu-Klottey Sub-Metro and his team organized a massive cleanup exercise together with the Ghana National Fire Service, the Police, the market women and other stakeholders, last Saturday to cleanup the Tema Station and its enclave.
According to Mr. Mats, the clean-up exercise was therefore, to mobilise the people to get involved in the process of transforming Accra into the cleaners city to the attainment of the Akufo Addo government’s goal.
He therefore assured the public that, the exercise was not going to be a nine day wonder, but in an agreement with all the stakeholders in the sub-metro, and as well as the traders, they would carried out this exercise on a regular bases. Thus, last Friday of every Month.
Mr. Betnard Yingura further cautioned the market women and the general public to desist from dumping solid waste and plastics containers into drains.
Meanwhile, Mr. Edward Awuye, Special Operations Officer of Jekora ventures limited called for attitudinal change among Ghanaians towards waste handling in the cities and urged the general public be careful on how to dispose refuse to avoid the outbreak of cholera.
