The flagbearer of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has called for urgent constitutional reforms to address what he describes as a crisis in the country’s political landscape.

This comes on the back of the recent expulsion of four Members of Parliament by Speaker Alban Bagbin.

Expressing concern over the stability of Ghana’s democracy, Mr. Mahama warned of potential risks to governance structures without immediate action.

Speaking at the 80th anniversary celebration of St. Joseph the Worker Anglican Church in Accra on Sunday, 27 October 2024, Mr. Mahama commended Speaker Bagbin’s efforts to de-escalate tensions in Parliament, emphasising his role in avoiding a clash with the judiciary.

“Recently, you saw what happened in Parliament. We almost had a constitutional crisis,” the NDC flagbearer stated.

According to the NDC flagbearer, “but for the mature handling of the Speaker in suspending the House, there could have been a clash between the judiciary and our Parliament and so, our government is in crisis.”

Mr. Mahama stressed the need to address ambiguities in the constitution to prevent future conflicts between branches of government.

He advocated for revisiting and refining the nation’s governance framework to ensure effective leadership and accountability.

“We need to reset, we need to restart, we need to look at our constitution again, we need to revise it and plug the loopholes and make it clearer so that in future we don’t have the kinds of issues that we have.”

Mr. Mahama added: “Our attitudes are in crisis.”
