Our obsession with money must die – Minister

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr. John Alexander Ackon, has called for the church to do more to help people to overcome greed and the unbridled crave for money.

It should strike at the heart of the social evils plaguing the society – corruption, robbery, cyber-crime and the narcotics drug trade among others.

Addressing the fourth annual general meeting of the Obuasi Diocesan Lay Movement Council of the Methodist Church at Adansi-Fomena, he spoke of the need to work together to build a society that worked for everybody.

The expectation was that the church would focus on assisting to raise the moral threshold – for people to uphold the values of integrity, modesty and humility.

Mr. Ackon also highlighted the need to preach against intolerance and the use of intemperate language by the political parties and their supporters as the nation inched towards the presidential and parliamentary elections.

He said there must be decorum to keep the political temperature low and protect the peace.

The Regional Minister encouraged the church to continue to lead efforts at helping all to smooth over their differences – to live in unity and harmony.

He noted that “Ghanaians are strong believers of the gospel” and as such “we should not let anything divide us since the bible teaches us to love one another”.

Mr. Ackon applauded the Methodist Church for it vital contribution to efforts at bring progress to the nation and asked that this was sustained.

The Right Reverend Hayford Aduse-Poku, the Diocesan Bishop, expressed worry about the growing indiscipline, lawlessness and impunity of the youth.

He said even more disturbing was the tacit encouragement of unruly and shameful conduct by the political parties.

Mr. James Kofi Osei-Owusu, the Diocese Lay Chairman, said they were determined to work hard to bring change to society, to make it a better place for everybody.
