Over 4 million Burkinabes dependent on cotton farming

Over four million Burkinabes out of Burkina Faso's population of 18 million, depend on cotton farming for their survival, an official source said.


In this West African country, over 80 percent of the population is actively involved in agriculture which is the main source of revenue for the population, especially those in rural areas.

wpid-cotton1.jpgSince 2009, cotton dethroned gold and became Burkina Faso’s number one export product, with last season’s production of 722,000 tons.

Burkina Faso is the largest cotton producer in West Africa, and the second producer in Africa after Egypt.
Burkina Faso Textiles Company (SOFITEX), in which the state has a 35 percent ownership, is the main actor in the country’s cotton sector.

To increase its capacities, SOFITEX has announced that on Jan. 12, it will sign in France with Societe General-France and the International Finance Corporation, a funding agreement of about 70 million euros. Enditem
