Over 583,500 hectares of land destroyed by bushfire in Mongolia

Ninety-three forest and steppe fires have been registered across Mongolia since the beginning of this year, burning 583,500 hectares of forest and grassland, the country’s National Emergency Management Agency said Tuesday.

People’s negligence was the leading cause of the wildfires, said the agency in a statement.

“The period from Sept. 20 to Nov. 10 is considered to be the dry conditions of autumn or the ‘fire-dangerous period’,” it said, urging the public not to make open fires or throw cigarette butts on the ground.
