At least 812 Nigerian health workers have been infected with the novel coronavirus, said an official on Tuesday.

Of those infected, 29 work for the Nigeria Center for Disease Control, according to Chikwe Ihekweazu, the agency’s head.

“They are not just numbers, but they are people and they matter, and we must remember. They are people I know who have families, wives, and children,” Ihekweazu told reporters in Abuja.

According to him, eight of them are at a treatment center in Idu, an industrial area in Abuja.

The official said the protection of health workers, especially those on the frontline of the pandemic, has become a top priority. He added that the government will continue to ensure constant provision of personal protective equipment to shield them from exposure. Enditem
