Paramount Chief of Avenor suspends festivals this year

The Avenor Traditional Council has said, festivals and durbars among other traditional activities and programmes are suspended until next year in order to safeguard the spread of COVID-19 in the country.

This follows the unstable situation of confirmed cases reported by the Ghana Health Service. Togbe Dorglo Anumah VI, Paramount Chief and President of Avenor Traditional Council made this call in order to intensify awareness of the preventive steps of helping the government oust the pandemic.

In a statement copied to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), the Traditional Council insists the annual ‘Denyaza’ festival, which is celebrated by communities within the Avenor land during Christmas season and other traditional functions have been suspended indefinitely.

“The Avenor Traditional Council as a statutory body, seizes this opportunity to prevail on leaders of all communities within the Avenor Traditional Area to observe the Government restriction protocols in combating the spread of COVID-19,” the statement said.

Togbe Dorglo further appealed to all Avenor Chiefs, Queenmothers, opinion leaders and youth groups to comply with the directives.

He added, festivals draw a lot of crowds together which would eventually spread the COVID-19 if one is affected among the crowd.

This, he said, led to the cancellation of the main festival called ‘Avenor Tutudoza,’ an annual festival celebrated by people of Avenor in November every year.

Togbe Dorglo also called on every individual to brace their quota in helping to contain the spread of COVID-19 since the war against the deadly disease was a multi-sectoral approach.
