Ghana’s Parliament has approved a €1.5 million tax waiver to support the supply and installation of integrated e-learning laboratories in Senior High Schools (SHSs).

This decision follows an €11.5 million commercial agreement between the government and Televic Group N.V. for the second phase of the project, which aims to enhance education through ICT integration.

The Finance Committee, led by Patrick Yaw Boamah, the Okaikwei Central constituency chair, endorsed the waiver, citing significant educational and socio-economic benefits. The committee’s report highlighted the positive impact on the academic sector and broader socio-economic advantages, leading to their recommendation for the House to approve the waiver.

While the opposition typically scrutinizes tax waivers, Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson supported this waiver, arguing that it is justified given its focus on improving educational resources. “Though we generally oppose tax waivers, this waiver is essential as it supports the integration of ICT in education, which is crucial for the country’s development,” Forson stated.
