Government of Ghana has the responsibility to provide everyone a job including those engaging in illegal mining activities, Board Chairman of Political and Economic Research Institute of Ghana (PERI-Ghana) said.
“What is the role of the government? …why do we allow them to lead us and collect our taxes to generate revenue for the country?” Mr. William Awuku Ahiadome asked.
“Every Ghanaian knows that the environmental degradation today is the worse and therefore we must stop illegal mining on our water bodies and on our lands”, he stressed.
“But what do we do with the bigger issue of the people we are taking their livelihood from them?” the Board Chairman bemoaned on Kumasi-based Ultimate FM’s morning.
According to him, government has responsibility to provide everyone including illegal miners before waging war against their businesses.
I will insist that government should work every day and night to get jobs for them before chasing them with military guard”, suggesting better policies than Planting for Food be implemented.
His comments were in reaction to that of former Minister of Environment Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Mahama Ayariga to the effect that farming is not alternative livelihood to prevent illegal and small scale miners from their illicit activities.
“We talk of farming as alternative livelihood, who said they do not know they could farm? …they know there are farms and they could farm but will the amount they generate from farming be the same like what they are getting from galamsey”, the lawmaker asked.
” They know government has provided fertilizer subsidies and they could farm but the illegal miners feel that this is not profitable for them especially the youth”, he observed.
