Clement Kofi Asare has lodged an appeal against the Kumasi High Court’s decision to dismiss his case challenging Prof. Rita Akosua Dickson’s reappointment as Vice-Chancellor of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
On Tuesday (30 July), the high court ruled that Asare’s suit lacked merit, prompting him to file a petition with the Court of Appeal, alleging judicial error and describing the verdict as a “travesty of justice.”
Asare maintains that the reappointment process was flawed and insists it warrants reconsideration. The status of the defendants in this latest legal action remains unclear.
The controversy arises as Prof. Dickson begins her second term on Thursday (1 August), coinciding with her birthday. Reports indicate she led a prayer session amidst mounting tensions over the dispute.
In response to the unfolding situation, the Ashanti Youth Association’s leadership is mobilizing stakeholders following a petition from the KNUST branch of the Asante Students Union.
Tweneboah Kodua, the Association’s secretary, disclosed plans to engage the university’s governing council and administration.
“As I speak with you, the president of AYA has instructed us to correspond with the governing council and school administration to seek clarity.
We also intend to meet with the petitioners who initiated legal action,” Kodua stated.
“KNUST holds a special place in Asanteman, with the Asantehene serving as chancellor. Given the current circumstances during his absence, we must proceed cautiously,” he added.
The appeal marks a continuation of the dispute surrounding Prof. Dickson’s reappointment, highlighting ongoing tensions within the university community and broader regional concerns.
