Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, Minister of Transport, Thursday announced that the Phase I of the Keta port project, estimated at $ 600 million will begin in the first quarter of 2022.
The Minister said Phase I of the project which was the “Port Nuclues” consisted of the main facilities of the key drivers of the commercial port development which included the commercial port gate with the access control and administration building, multi-purpose terminal with a berth length of 500m and a RoRo Dock, oil terminal consisting of tank farm and an oil jetty.
The rest are shipyard with dedicated basin for floating docks and vessel maintenance, fishing port and related amenities, small craft services and access roads.
speaking at a stakeholder engagement on the project in Accra, said feasibility studies on relevant economic, technical, legal, and social factors of the project were positive, stressing “the project is a viable investment.”
The studies are being contracted by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority and carried out by a consortium comprising Sellhorn Ingenieurgesellschaft GmbH, Inveni Portum Solutions GmbH, and PSP Architekten.
Mr Asiamah said the government was committed to seeing the realisation of the project, stating that “the project will be a game changer for the economic livelihoods of the Volta and Oti regions.”
The stakeholder engagement, he said, marked an important milestone for the country to strengthen public private partnership as a way of financing public infrastructure projects for accelerated development.
“The involvement of the private sector is to bring the needed capital, expertise and efficiencies to the delivery of the project,” the Minister said.
“Our vision as a country is to create an optimistic, self-confident and prosperous nation, through the creative exploitation of human and natural resources, and operating within a democratic, open and fair society.”
The Minister stated that the vision was informed by the need for a strong economy that expanded opportunities, inspired people to start businesses, stimulated expansion of existing businesses, leading to job creation.
He appealed to the traditional leaders to encourage the people in the community to lend their support to the project and avoid negative acts that would hinder the smooth execution of the project.
Mr Komla Ofori, the Project Engineer, Keta Port, encouraged private sector participation, as a key to the successful commercial implementation of the project.
Some of the stakeholders expressed satisfaction about the project and called on the government to address environmental and social challenges that might arise as a result of the project.
Torgbui Gobah Tengey Seddoh, a Development Chief of Anlo Keta, commended the Government for the initiative saying, “the project is a savior for all which must be hailed by all and will uplift Keta high.”
He urged the authorities to put in place measures to ensure the sustainability of the project and the need to increase education on the project to the community to avoid any misrepresentation of facts.
