An ophthalmic nurse at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has strongly advised against the consumption of Piles (kooko) medications to cure itchy eyes.
According to Madam Evelyn Abena Kyere, best thing to do in that situation is to go hospital adding that”even buying over-the-counter eye drops for use was dangerous especially when it is not prescribed by a doctor.”
She was addressing residents of Tema Newtown who had gathered at their local Presbyterian Church’s courtyard to be screen for eye related problems and the offer of free medication and advice.
The eye screening exercise was organised by the West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) as part of their social responsibilities towards their on-shore host communities.
Madam Kyere said the eye formed an integral part of brain so any sign of discomfort must be subjected to scientific investigation for desired results.
Mr Kofi Mensah, External Relations Manager, WAPCo, told the journalists that the company in consultation with the residents chose the eye screening exercise since there was no eye clinic in the area.
According to him,WAPCo had organised a similar one at Kpone, a settlement near Tema, and would be do same in other host communities.
He said the screening was absolutely free and called on residents especially the elderly to take advantage of it.
