The People?s National Convention (PNC) was thrown into a state of shock in the early hours of voting Friday when its chairman for the Karaga constituency of the Northern Region, Mr Abdulai Bawa lost his life in an accident minutes after casting his vote.
Mr Bawa, who is popularly known as Afa Bawa, crushed into a pick up vehicle with his motorbike while on his way to Savelugu.
According to the Northern Regional Secretary of the PNC, Mr Abdulai Razak the accident occurred outskirts of Karaga.
He said Mr Bawa was on his way to Savelugu where he had intended to pick his wife and return with her to Karaga to enable her cast her vote.
?We are really saddened by this,? said Mr Razak, adding that the regional executives had already informed the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the PNC Presidential Flag-bearer, Mr Hassan Ayariga of the unfortunate incident.
At the time of the accident, members of the PNC Northern Regional executive body were moving from constituency to constituency monitoring the conduct of the elections.
The Second Vice Chairman of the party in the region, Mr Amuda Kassim said due to the accident, the party had abandoned the monitoring exercise and had gone into an emergency meeting.
He described the late Afa Bawa as a very hardworking member of the PNC, adding that ?we have lost a great party asset.?
