The Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Arhin, has arrested Obrempong Nii Ahuma Kojo III shortly after he held a press conference this morning.
The arrest has sparked outrage among supporters, who accuse the police of attempting to silence him.Obrempong Nii Ahuma Kojo III had called the press conference to address issues regarding an ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Ngleshie Alata, where multiple parties are claiming the title of Mantse (chief) of the area.
During the conference, Obrempong Kojo alleged misconduct and corruption at the National House of Chiefs, led by Nana Yaw Ogyeahoho, including the wrongful gazetting of a rival claimant.
However, following the conference, police officers arrested Obrempong Kojo, reportedly on the grounds that he was not authorized to speak to the media.
“When did a press conference become an offense in Ghana? Or are the police trying to suppress everyone to support the wrong candidate?” questioned a concerned observer.
Supporters of Obrempong Nii Ahuma Kojo III argue that his arrest is an act of intimidation aimed at silencing his attempts to expose alleged injustices. “The intimidation will not work; he has not committed any act of violence,” stated a spokesperson for his camp.”
The media engagement took place in a private house, and the police cannot be used by his opponents to suppress the injustice done to Obrempong Ahuma Kojo III.
They are now appealing to the Inspector General of Police, Dampare Akuffo, to intervene and secure his release.
As of now, there has been no official response from the police regarding the reasons for the arrest or any potential charges against Obrempong Nii Ahuma Kojo III.
