Police officers have been deployed at the Abeka Lapaz section of the George Bush Motorway where a cargo truck loaded with fish crushed two vehicles last night, killing three occupants.

Two others who sustained serious injuries are currently in hospital.

They spoke to Joy News’ Michaela Anderson when she visited them Wednesday morning.

Narrating the incident, one of the victims said he boarded the urvan bus to church after work and just as he got to his destination and took a step out of the vehicle, the disaster struck.

?I just heard a noise and before I realized it was a long container that fell on the car?and fortunately the upper part of my body?was safe and the lower part of it was locked up in the car,? he said.

According to him, it took rescuers more than two hours after the accident to rescue him and the others.

Another victim said he saw the container coming ominously on the vehicle in which he was and quickly broke the side glass to escape but it was only enough for him to save the upper part of his body.

The lower part got trapped.

Joy News? Francis Abban who visited the scene of the accident this morning reports a number of officers from the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit are currently stationed there to enforce traffic regulations.

The Police MTTU Commander for Tesano, Ernest Acheampong told Joy News they have resolved to maintain personnel there to help avert future accidents and ensure pedestrians and other road users observe traffic regulations.

Last night?s accident is the latest in a string of deaths that have occurred there, mainly due to improper use of the road.

Speaking on Joy FM?s Super Morning Show Wednesday morning, Accra Mayor Alfred Vanderpuije who was at the accident scene last night said the tragedy could have been avoided.

He said he had only Monday been to the exact spot where the accident occurred and advised hawkers that selling around the area was a perilous venture.

He said the accident scene was horrific because he saw trapped victims who badly needed help but could do nothing to help them.
