Police in Italy arrest 85 suspected Mafiosi

Italian police have launched a nationwide raid targeting dozens of suspected Mafiosi.

Investigators arrested a total of 85 men and women, the police announced on Monday morning. Of those, 63 were taken into custody and 18 were under house arrest, while the authorities had imposed reporting requirements on the remaining four.

The suspected criminals of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra face charges including drug trafficking, Mafia association, corruption and extortion, police added.

Investigators arrested people in the Sicilian cities of Palermo and Trapani, among others, but also in Naples and the capital Rome, according to the report.

The arrests were concentrated on five Mafia groups, it said. Among them were leading members of the Vitale family, which is notorious for drug trafficking.
