Power Ministry and Distressed VRA Staff Meet Over Planned Protests

The Power Ministry will today, August 4 meet workers of the Volta River Authority and their management as they begin series of protests.

The workers are peeved over plans to cede some power plants and a parcel of land at Kpone to private developers. The plants are the T3 plant in the Aboadze thermal enclave and the Mines Reserve Plant RP at the Tema Thermal Power station.

They have vowed to use all available means to stop what they call the unwarranted dissipation of the Authority’s assets.

Macintosh Essuman Aidoo, Communication Officer at the Power Ministry told Starr News: “There is some kind of misunderstanding, because as far as the Ministry is concerned, we have not ceded any land around the Tema enclave as they are saying to any company, the ministry is always open to proposals from private developers and companies seeking to invest in the power sector”.

It is unclear if the VRA workers will start their planned demonstration today in view of the meeting with the Power Minister.
