Pregnancy complications, child diseases kill 100 in Nigeria everyday

At least 100 women and children die daily in Nigeria due to pregnancy complications and child-killer diseases, an official of the United Nations Children Education Fund (UNICEF) said Wednesday.

Nigeria, which is two percent of global population, currently accounts for 10 percent of global maternal, newborn and child deaths, said Halima Abdul, a representative of UNICEF in the African most populous country.
“It is worrisome that six women die as a result of pregnancy- related complications daily, while 95 under-five children also die. Twenty-three of these children will be infants within the first 28 days of life, while 57 percent of these deaths are compounded by underlying malnutrition,” the official said.
According to her, the total deaths in these most vulnerable groups are about a plane-load each hour, implying that each hour in Nigeria, many pregnant women, children and newborn, die.
The UN agency attributed death of pregnant mothers in Nigeria to delay and non-provision of health centers, recognition of going to health centers, lack of good roads and transportation. Similarly, the agency identified under-nutrition and malaria as major underlying causes of child deaths in the country, apart from measles, diarrhea, neonatal and pneumonia.
Calling for increase in efforts to put an end to the health challenge, the official urged all stakeholders and at all levels to help reduce maternal and child death, adding “a woman must not die because she wants to give life”. Enditem
