(dpa/GNA) – A public health campaign backed by the German government is recommending that pregnant women exercise enough to get up a slight sweat and breathe faster every day.

The Healthy Life Network, funded by federal health authorities, is urging women not to ease off physical activity as their weight increases. Instead they should practice “moderate” exercise and aim to achieve a total of at least 150 minutes per week.

The campaign advises expectant mothers to try rapid walking in the open air for at least half an hour daily. Riding a bicycle vigorously enough to have to breathe faster is also recommended.

Exercise outdoors fulfills two targets at the same time. Sunlight on the skin increases levels of vitamin D, which tend to decline during pregnancy, while the movement improves circulation and general fitness.

Spreading the exercise over several days of the week is better than doing 150 minutes in one go.
