President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo was honoured with an Honorary Doctor of Science Degree (Honoris Causa) at a prestigious ceremony at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).
This accolade recognizes his exceptional contributions to advancing science education and healthcare in Ghana.
In his acceptance speech, President Akufo-Addo expressed deep gratitude and humility, acknowledging that this honour reflects not only his achievements but also his administration’s collective efforts and the Ghanaian people’s unwavering support.
He highlighted that this latest recognition joins a distinguished list of honorary degrees bestowed upon him by esteemed institutions worldwide, including the University of Fort Hare, the University of Liberia, the University of Cape Coast, the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne, and Valley View University.
President Akufo-Addo underscored the pivotal role of education in national development, particularly emphasizing the significance of science education in fostering innovation and economic growth.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring accessible education for all Ghanaian youth through initiatives such as the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) policy, which has significantly increased secondary school enrollment and prioritized STEM subjects.
“By eliminating financial barriers, we have enabled over 5.7 million students to access secondary education, many of whom are pursuing science courses,” President Akufo-Addo emphasized. He noted that the policy aims to boost enrollment and provide a quality education that equips young people with essential skills and knowledge to tackle modern challenges.
Under his leadership, substantial strides have been made in enhancing STEM education, including establishing STEM high schools, laboratory upgrades, and investments in teacher training.
The President highlighted the construction of 186 state-of-the-art science laboratories under the STEM Education Enhancement Programme, equipped with modern facilities to facilitate hands-on learning and scientific exploration.
President Akufo-Addo also touched on broader initiatives to foster a robust educational ecosystem that supports innovation and excellence.
By prioritizing STEM education, Ghana is positioned to compete globally and harness the transformative potential of science and technology for national development.
Beyond education, the President highlighted significant achievements in healthcare delivery under his administration, including the construction and equipping of polyclinics, rehabilitation of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, and establishment of treatment centres nationwide.
These efforts underscore the administration’s commitment to ensuring a healthy population as a cornerstone of national development.
The President acknowledged the ongoing Phase II expansion project at UHAS, funded through a $60 million grant from the Chinese Government. This expansion will bolster the University’s capacity to train healthcare professionals and drive cutting-edge research and innovation.
He thanked the Chinese Government and other stakeholders for contributing to this vital infrastructure development.
Concluding his address, President Akufo-Addo inspired UHAS students to become future leaders, educators, scientists, and healthcare professionals in Ghana. He urged them to pursue their aspirations with dedication, emphasizing their pivotal role in the country’s advancement.
“To mark this special occasion, I am pleased to announce that I have personally donated ten desktop computers and ten laptops to the University.
President Akufo-Addo announced that these devices will support the administration of UHAS and enhance the University’s operational efficiency.
A sense of pride and accomplishment marked the ceremony at UHAS as the University celebrated President Akufo-Addo’s outstanding contributions to education and healthcare in Ghana.
The conferment of the honorary degree stands as a testament to his steadfast commitment to national development and the welfare of the Ghanaian people.
